Story about this
Many centuries previously, the Emperor Shah Jahan described Kashmir as ‘Paradise on Earth’. But we can now rephrase his views and state that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is paradise on Earth, particularly Ladakh. While we have seen the most beautiful places in Ladakh up until now, you definitely would not want to miss the famous ‘Magnetic Hill’ located along the Leh-Kargil-Baltik National Highway. This mysterious hill leaves visitors and locals gaping in wonder and astonishment at the very intriguing phenomenon that occurs at a certain point in the area.
At Magnetic Hill sits a sign that instructs you to stop your car inside a square white box drawn into the road. It also tells you to kill the engine, leave the car in neutral and leave the hand brake down. You will be surprised to see that your car is slowly moving of its own accord on a road that actually appears to go uphill. Plenty of reasons have been attributed to this phenomenon, the most dramatic of which comes from the locals who believe that the hands of supernatural creatures are at work behind this unusual gravity-defying anomaly. Of all the similar Magnetic Hills spread out across the world, the one at Ladakh is particularly awe-inspiring. It is situated about 30 km away from Leh and is elevated by a height of 14,000 feet above sea level. The science behind this hill is a combination of optical illusion and a theory on strong magnetic fields. Whatever may be the reason, the Magnetic Hill at Ladakh is definitely pulling a lot of tourists.
